Powering Down

Cutting back on utility usage mean to cut back on electricity, water, phone service and gas. We all know to turn off lights when leaving a room but do you know that any new appliance you purchase must be energy efficient. This included air conditioners and furnaces and can save hundreds of dollars over the year.

A gas dryer is more efficient that an electric one but not all homes have hookups for gas. The gas dryer will cost a little more to buy but it will save you more over time.  If you have a vacuum with attachments, take time to clean off the refrigerator coils every so often and you will hear is cycle less often.  When it runs less, it saves on electricity.

When it comes to heating your home, you can get a free, or low cost, home heating audit. When this is done, you will be told which appliances are using the most power or if it needs replacing.  Roof insulation is important to keep in the heat you are paying for. Extra can be added to help stop heat loss.  Watering outdoors should not be done at the hottest part of the day as it will only evaporate in the sun. Water in the morning or evening.
